Thank you for your interest in guiding the next generation of innovators! This application is for adults who want to coach or mentor a FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Challenge team. No prior robotics or engineering experience is required—just a passion for helping youth learn, grow, and have fun.
Please review the program summary and coach expectations below before filling out the form.
FIRST LEGO League is a global STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) program for students aged 9–14. It introduces youth to real-world engineering challenges through hands-on, team-based learning. Each season is split into three main components:
The Robot Challenge: Students design, build, and program an autonomous LEGO robot to complete specific missions on a themed playing field.
The Innovation Project: Teams identify a real-world problem related to the season’s theme, research it, design a creative solution, and share it with their community.
The Core Values: Throughout everything, students practice teamwork, inclusion, discovery, and Gracious Professionalism (fierce competition combined with mutual respect and kindness).
As a coach, your role is not to build the robot or write the code. Your role is to facilitate, guide, and keep the team organized. The kids do the work!
Time Commitment: The FLL season typically runs from August/September through December/January (depending on tournament dates). Coaches should expect to commit 4 hours per week, which includes leading 1–2 team practices and doing a bit of prep work.
Event Attendance: Coaches must attend at least one official tournament (usually a Friday) with the team late in the season.
Safety & Background Checks: Because you will be working directly with minors, all accepted coaches must complete a youth protection screening and background check through the FIRST organization.
No Tech Skills Required? Seriously! Yes! The best coaches are great project managers, encouragers, and coordinators. Technical resources, step-by-step curricula, and coding guides are fully provided.
